Personality: Mark's a stereotypical good ol' boy. He's chivalrous towards women, polite to men, and if you wrong him or someone he feels protective towards, he'll hunt you to the ends of the earth. He grew up privileged, and his outlook on life was heavily influenced by the fact that he never wanted for anything. It's hard for him to conceptualize the word "no" unless it's "no I don't want to". Because of that, he can come off as arrogant. He doesn't really care.
Still, Mark never went to college and resents anyone who he thinks is a stuck up intellectual type. He'll get louder and more competitive around anyone he thinks might be trying to show him up, especially when women are around.
Mark's personality isn't entirely negative, though. He makes friends easily and is fiercely loyal. He's also a very fun-loving guy and is always up for an adventure, which has led to a lot of his friends coming to him with their crazy ideas: Mark will support them no matter how insane it might sound.
History: Mark James Dallas was born in Wichita Falls, Texas on September 19, 1976. His father was an oil company foreman, who had worked his way up from the Gulf rigs to running his own field outside of Wichita Falls, in north-Central Texas. Mark's mother was a housewife, who took care of the four Dallas children: three boys and a girl. Mark is the third child of the family. His family had been blue collar workers in Texas since the mid-nineteenth century, it's only with Mark's generation that the children have been born into money.
Mark was named, in part, after his mother's brother James. James was named after the famous Texan James Bowie, and when Mark was six he received his first Bowie knife from his uncle. The two were inseparable for years, going on hunting, fishing and camping trips at least twice a month. James had been in the Army during the latter part of the Vietnam War, and would often tell his nephew of those times in the jungle. When Mark was thirteen, James died of colon cancer. Mark ran off into the countryside for a week to mourn his uncle.
His childhood was fairly idyllic. He got along with his siblings and had plenty of friends. He played junior football and baseball, and was popular at school. By high school, he was expected to follow in his older brother's footsteps and end up as the quarterback of the football team. Though Mark enjoyed football, he hated the pressure that came with it, and instead focused on playing baseball. He dated one girl through his entire high school career, but after graduation she moved to California to go to college.
Mark stayed in Texas and worked a few odd jobs, mostly as a nature guide or survivalist instructor. He got married when he was nineteen, because he thought his girlfriend was pregnant. Having been raised in a conservatively Baptist household, he felt that this was the only option. When he found out that his girlfriend wasn't, in fact, pregnant, he divorced her.
After the September 11 attacks, Mark, who was just shy of his twenty-fifth birthday, enlisted in the Army. Beginning in 2003, he served two tours of duty in Afghanistan and one in Iraq, all in combat infantry batallions. After a tank attack on his unit, Mark pulled three soldiers from the wreck and managed to lead his group to safety through an enemy combatant-controlled town. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with Valor. When he came home, he buried the medal in the ground at his uncle's gravesite.
Mark doesn't talk much about his military service. If it comes up, he talks about it proudly, but it's not something he advertises. It gave him a more worldly view of life, though, and a lot of his personal opinions changed while he was in the Middle East. While in Afghanistan, he met a young Sunni woman named Mahira who spoke English and worked with the soldier to try to move civilians out of war zones. Despite regulations, Mark had an affair with her, leading the conception of his daughter, Raela. Mark saw to it that Raela and her mother would be able to emigrate to the United States, for their safety, but he refused to get married again. The two live in New York City, and Mark sends them money every month. With the exception of his sister, he never told anyone in his family or friends about his daughter.
When he returned he decide to devote his time to a combination of charitable organizations and personal goals. One of the few ways Mark has ever been able to really be himself is while he's out in the wilderness, so he spent more and more time hunting, hiking, and camping, even traveling to other countries to explore there. That was how he came to Heritage Lake. While there, he had a dream about fishing with his uncle. Deciding it was a sign from God, Mark decided to stick around for a little while and see what life brought him.
Fears: Commitment, responsibility, fluffernutter (long story).
Desires: A really old and really good bottle of bourbon, to live up to his uncle's name, and to make sure his mother lives comfortably in her twilight years.
One Secret: The first person he shot in the Middle East was a twelve year old boy with an automatic rifle. He's never told anyone, and it scares him that it doesn't bother him more.
Five Random Facts:
1) Has two tattoos: one on his left upper arm and one trailing down his back. Bother are inspire by ancient Middle Eastern art, and both were done in Afghanistan.
2) His favorite movie of all time is The Big Lebowski, which shocks anyone that knows him.
3) Is a participating member of the Republican Party and the National Rifle Association, for pretty much the same reasons.
4) Roots for the Houston Astros baseball team and the Dallas Cowboys football team.
5) Tries to avoid his family, other than on required holidays, but talks to his sister at least twice a week. She's a liberal lesbian teaching at a college in New York, but they get along really well despite the fact that they seem to have nothing in common.
6) Brushes his teeth three times a day, sometimes more.
7) His favorite food is Chicken a la King. His least favorite food is sushi.
